So yesterday (September 6, 2026) was the debut of Shonen Jump's newest manga: "Graykeith: Translator Daemonica"
The manga takes place in an alternate version of Earth where (50 years prior to the story itself) demonic entities broke through into our world, and very quickly integrated into our society. Our lead, a young woman named Kisaragi) tries to look for the "Wizard", Graykeith. He immediately takes offense because he's not a Wizard, rather he's a translator. He's a linguist who studies demonic languages and translates them for the human world to understand. Kisaragi hands him a book stating that her grandmother (a lamia) had willed it to her before she passed. After translating 90% of the book, fact-checking the last 10%, and recovering the book from a bunch of thieving bats; Graykeith reveals that the book wasn't a grimoire or spellbook, but rather a cookbook that Kisaragi's grandmother wanted to leave her. After realizing the strength of words and the value of communicating between languages, Kisaragi chooses to study translation under Graykeith.
It's a quaint little story that shows the value of language and communication even through language barriers. It's got some fun artwork, a neat concept, and a fascinating world to explore. I found the humor kind of dry, but I was able to look past that for everything else the story had to offer. The main thing that worries me is that I'm unsure if a story like this has staying power. I hope it doesn't end up rushing to a speedy ending, but I fully expect this to not break 20 Chapters. Even still, I think it'll be a fun ride nonetheless. I'm giving it an optimistic 8/10.
